Sport
Sector Leads: James Hood - Swim Alberta, Michael Neary -Cross Country Alberta and Sean Nickerson - Livesaving Society
The sport sector is engaged but still has some challenges related to NSO/PSO implementation, specialization and participant ownership. This sector has a strong knowledge base associated with the CS4L principles and access to sport specific LTAD experts.
The future will depend on the engagement of parents, coaches, leaders and technical programmers to modify and adapt traditional sport practices.
Current Initiatives:
-
Ringette Alberta is
meeting with Vicki for a potential contract for LTAD Implementation
at the PSO level. First meeting is occurring at the CS4L
Conference in Gatineau. - Bowling Federation of Alberta is meeting Feb 17-19 in Winnipeg with the Bowling Federation of Canada to set up and design the Implementation Plan for the sport. Three Albertans will be joining 27 of their other PSO counterparts for this session. The CS4L expert lead for this work is Carolyn Trono.
- The Bowling Federation of Alberta has supplied a copy of the LTAD - Plan for Bowling to me for inclusion in a resources centre. How are we going to create a repository for resource materials?
- Swim Educators - Sears I Can Swim CS4L Project
- Swim Alberta, Alberta Rhythmic Gymnastics and Swim Educators
are working together to update the Teacher Training modules for the
Sears I Can Swim Program. Rhythmic Gymnastics will be involved in
the integration of musicality and rhythm into the early childhood
programs (Mom & Me). Two of Swim Alberta's Learning
Facilitators will be working with Swim Educators on the inclusion
of FMS and PL into the materials. This project also includes
some updated partnership work with High 5.
- Discussion has also started on trying to add the FMS Leaders Programs to PSO's LF training and development.
- Canadian Sport Policy
- The "Final Draft" of the new Canadian Sport Policy is now under review, the vision is as follows:
- Vision: A dynamic and innovative sport culture that promotes values-based engagement and excellence in sport.
- The Goals:
All Canadians have the fundamental skills, knowledge and attitudes, to participate in structured and unstructured sport. All Canadians have the opportunity to participate in structured and unstructured sport, for the purposes of fun, health, socializing and relaxation, delivered in a manner that maximizes community-building impacts. All Canadians have the opportunity to improve and measure their performances against others in competition, in a safe and ethical manner. Canadians, in increasing numbers, are systematically achieving world-class results, through fair and ethical means, at the highest levels of international competition, and are promoting positive values through sport at home and abroad.
- Rhythmic Gymnastics Alberta presented their Rainbow Rhythmics program as part of the poster series at the CS4L conference in Gatineau. The program got good support from a variety of sources and the integration of musicality and rhythm into the program is being seen as a benefit for the development of the fundamental skill of rhythm for several groups.
