Winter Walk Day

More than 110,000 Albertans stepped out for Winter Walk
Day! A total of 3.1 million minutes were
logged on Winter Walk Day
on February 8, 2012, an annual event
encouraging Albertans to walk outdoors for a minimum of 15
minutes.
Numbers are still coming in but so far 393 schools, 112
workplaces and 114 community groups throughout Alberta stepped up
for Winter Walk Day, with some groups issuing challenges to
encourage others to get active.
The Alberta Motor Association will be recognizing an active
school, workplace, seniors group and five communities with the AMA
Step Up Alberta - Winter Walk Day Challenge award. The
recipients of the award will be announced soon.
Walking is a simple and economical way to incorporate physical
activity into daily routines, and it is a great way to meet the
recommendations in the new Canadian Physical Activity
Guidelines. Studies have shown that accumulating even small
amounts of exercise throughout the day can have a positive effect
on overall health.
